Rally racing is not easy. Not for the drivers, team, or production crew. While covering the Rally xD racing team for Toyota’s youth brand Scion, our teams would face snow, hail, rain, wind, mud, and dust. From Oregon to Missouri to Michigan, Scion’s rally video series would require transporting camera and equipment into deep forests 4-8 hours away from major cities.
With no phone signals and GPS often blocked by tall trees, production would often be competing in a rally of their own. Unmarked logging roads and access tunnels would be paths to the best angles and tree stumps became lunch tables as leap frogging through the forest was paramount to getting the required footage. A true test of production logistics, the Rally America series was not for the timid.
